Tactile Lettering: D is for Donuts
D is for donuts! I don’t indulge in donuts but that just means more for you!
Tactile Lettering: C is for Chocolate
C is for cacao and chocolate. Cacao beans and nibs provided by @frescochocolate! If you haven’t tried Fresco Chocolates before, their artisan creations are so complex they deserve their own chocolate tasting.
Tactile Lettering: B is for Black Beans
Second up in my tactile lettering alphabet: b is for black beans! After taking @adehogue‘s class in tactile type at @letter_west I raided my pantry and was delighted by how much fun food I had to play with. Use what you’ve got!
Tactile Lettering: A is for Asparagus
And the tactile lettering alphabet begins! A is for asparagus, and these beauties were sourced from our local Burien Farmer’s Market. After the shoot we grilled these bad boys up and got ’em good and charred. Who says you can’t play with your food?
I’ve styled out a few letters of the alphabet and it’s been a blast! For years I was an ecommerce editorial stylist so I’m used to working with my hands on set. To blend that with my love of lettering? I’m in heaven!
Happy Summer
Welcome, old friend. Got a head start on summer spending the last week in Albuquerque and its dry 90° heat! 🏜🌞
What are your favorite summer past times? I’m a summer baby so this time of year makes me feel alive!
Back to School
This week I’m at a dance festival in New Mexico, before that I was at @letter_west in Utah, and it’s pushing my mind and my body to adapt and evolve. It’s like I’m back at school again! What have you been learning?
You can follow my stories at @saraheward for more of the flamenco festival!
Tactile Lettering: Self Medication with Food
Last year I did a little fun project with @brianweissphoto combining food and typography. The idea was around how we self-medicate with food, sometimes indulgently, sometimes beneficially. After @letter_west I resuscitated it and am going to letter my way through the alphabet with food type.

Happy Father’s Day: Pinball Card
Growing up my dad used to take me to the arcade for our Daddy/daughter outings, and he still has a great love of pinball. It made for great inspiration for his card, finished right under the wire!
Happy Father’s Day!
Nourishing the Creative Life
We all know how it feels when our creativity feels like stagnant waters. On the heels of the luminous Letter West conference, my book club read a chapter from Women Who Run With The Wolves (favorite book, ever) about Nourishing the Creative Life. In it, CPE says this:
“Creativity is not a solitary movement. That is its power. Whatever is touched by it, whoever hears it, sees it, senses it, knows it, is fed. That is why beholding someone else’s creative word, image, idea, fills us up, inspires us to do our own creative work. A single creative act has the potential to feed a continent.”
We feasted on this creative energy at Letterwest and I came home full and happy with renewed energy for my craft, and beautiful bright ideas. Ideas can be tenuous as smoke but seem to take form when you can be courageous and take action. Thank you @letter_west, @beccaclason and every person I crossed paths with last week for being a catalyst for creativity.
I have a fun new tactile lettering series I’m working on that I’ll start to roll out this weekend!
